Here you can see some of the development stages for creating the packaging which will hold the design illustrations. I wanted to create the packaging out of relatively light weight material like card or plastic and I want the design to be quite simple but have enough space to hold the designs well.
You can see below in the top left that I started with the idea of a tray-like design for packaging where the plastic pots that the meals come in would sit in the holes. As you move over to the top right there is a design showing how the images could be seperated across the cellophane on each pot in the packaging to create the overall image of a manta ray. This would work quite nicely but is a little bit over complicated for what I want to achieve.
As you move down there are some variations on the designs. The most successful of these ideas was the idea on the bottom left showing how the packaging could sort of stick around the top of the pots so that they hold it up and less packaging is used.
I took this design idea and tried to come up with a good perspective sketch to show exactly what the idea looks like in my head. After a few failed attempts I think the bottom left sketch works quite well to show what I mean. Next to it on the right shows a basic attempt at a starting idea for a net.
I redrew the net idea from above and stuck it to card to make it more stable and then assembled the net as seen below.
It worked quite successfully so I vectorised the net in Illustrator to the exact size so that it could fit one single plastic style meal pot as are common on most airline flights.
I printed it out and assembled the design which seemed to work pretty well.
But as you can see here I hadn't anticipate the size of the top of the pot so it didn't really fit properly.
Also the lid was taller than I had imagined which I hadn't taken in to account so the packaging top didn't come over and up enough to close.
I made some changes to the lid and to a few minor areas of the net and redrew it in to illustrator. Below is the final vectorised version of the net packaging.
Next I have to put the designs together for the packaging so I created this basic idea to show the kind of thing that I will be looking to produce for the packaging designs. The lid will effectively have 3 sections: The logo, the image and the type. The rest will just be a really basic colour design or pattern.
Next to that are a few ideas for phrases to use for the type. I need to try and come up with some that are catchy and a bit clever.
