Macced storyboard examples

To make the storyboards a bit more professional looking, I have mocked up a couple of them as they might look as stills when actually animating. This is much better practice for a professional design, as from these examples an animator would be able to see the kind of style and colours of the designs a lot better than just from hand drawn single colour versions.

I started by vectoring a couple of the more interesting storyboard and then colouring them in illustrator as I had imagined them in my head when originally producing them.

Animation Brief: Speed test

This is a quick animation showing the first few seconds of the spider animation to get a feel for FPS and what kind of speed it plays at.

Animation Brief - Character Development

To start developing the character a bit more, I scanned in the original drawings and used illustrator to vector them, giving them a bit more of a cartoon/ animated appearance.

The style works pretty well, but I need to figure out how they will work when coloured. I did these quick colour test, but havent decided on a final or appropriate colour for the final spider. Click the image to make it bigger.

I also need to think about how detailed the animation will be. It will inevitably need shading which effectively adds another, darker colour to each asset or image. This will definitely need to be considered, not least because dealing with shadow even slightly realistically will increase animation time dramatically. The examples below show a simple change to mouth colour, and then a shaded example which could be used as a final design idea:

Animation Brief - Higher Resolution Scans

These are the higher resolution scans for the animation brief original storyboards. They are still fairly low in quality and still need to be redrawn in a larger, more detailed scale, but these are useful for now and will be good to work with.

Animation Brief - Character Development

The first fairytale that I'm working on for the animation brief is the "Itsy Bitsy Spider" classic. This is a very well known nursery rhyme and it is quite interesting and I immediately had some ideas for it, so that's why i chose it very quickly. The protagonist is obviously a spider, so I started making some rough character development for him (or her). Im trying to keep the style simple and cartoony but detailed enough to give the character a range of possible emotions and situations to get involved in. The tale is, after all, one of sorrow and joy; hardships and triumphs. again, needs to be scanned.

Animation Brief - Initial Storyboards

These are the intial storyboards for the animation briefs. They need to be scanned properly and high quality, larger storyboards need to be made once im finalising, but from these you get the kind of idea of where I'm going.

Final Statements of Intent

The first of these statements was ok, but the word illustrative wasn't really fitting to the statement. I am interested in using illustration wherever possible but saying "image driven" includes that and defines the statement by including everything image based.

Statements of Intent

- An illustrative investigation of branding and identity with a focus on promotion/ marketing.

- A conceptual investigation of animation and motion graphics with a focus on entertainment.

- An image based investigation of packaging and identity in promotion with a focus on illustration

- An image led investigation involving identity with a focus on screen based design

- A conceptual investigation of image and type with a focus on editorial design

Brief Selection Exercises

These were the sheets made from the session on thurs 22nd.

To start with I made a list of all the things that I want to do with the year and all the things that I want to achieve with the year, trying to get as many as possible.

Next I had to do the same with these 3 headings; themes being areas of interest, contexts being specific design disciplines and products being products.

Finally I used the above headings to separate out what I want and what I need and then separate each of those out again into skills, process and product.

The purpose of all of this is to try and help clarify what I want to get out of the remainder of the course
