Flick Books
As part of the Silent Movie brief we have started to create some flick books to help understand how frames work and to experiment a bit with composition and sequencing without the use of a computer.
These are a couple of flick books that I have made and videoed in action.

Silent Movie - Typeface Choice
For the Silent Movie brief I have to create at least four 5 second videos featuring type in black and white and one other colour. The videos must be in 16:9 PAL widescreen and must be related to the following 3 words. Each word is quite different in effect and the dynamic that they can be represented in:
CRUNCH - Quite a static word/ doesn't involve too much movement.
EXTEND - A more animated word than crunch, will involve more movement.
BOUNCE - A very active word compared to the others. Lots of movement.
I decided that the first step should be to pick a suitable typeface for the words to start planning and storyboarding so I got a few typefaces together so that i could see which ones work better than other.
For the word 'Crunch' I want a typeface that is bold. The word itself is quite bold and connotes a loud noise so I'd like a quite loud looking typeface. I image that the word would be in upper case because it looks more harsh.

The best of these are probably: Impact, Gill Sans MT Extra Condensed, Franklin Gothic, Eras Bold ITC, Britannic Bold, Bernard MT Condensed and Poplar Std Black.
For the word 'Extend' I want a thinner more mechanical looking typeface as I imagine different kinds of machinery and stuff when I hear the word extend. I want the letterforms to be quite blocky but the word extend almost suggests something being stretched so I'd like them to be thinner than the crunch typefaces.
I think that the best typefaces for extend are: Aller Light Italic, Century Gothic, Copperplate Gothic Light, Courier New, Eras Light ITC, Niagra Solid, OCR A Std and Rockwell Condensed.
For the word 'Bounce' I want bold typefaces again but slightly less jagged than the ones used for crunch. You can see that I started using uppercase and then changed to lowercase when I realised that some letterforms like the lower case 'e' were much rounder and bouncier looking than the uppercase version.
I think that the best typefaces for this word are: Aller Display, Bauhaus 93, Century Gothic, Impact, LuzSans-Book, Proetarsk and TW Cen MT.
