For the "This article will change your life" column I wanted to try and create some information graphics to show the idea of amounts of money being lost in translation from figures to actual currency. I used the story of birds as an example to say that a pound is not a lot of money between 99 birds. I used simple symbols to represent it.
For "Relationship Maths" I simply edited a photograph of a calculator and change the number on the central button to a symbol of a heart.
For the Tim Dowling article I used the idea of a calendar to represent the story being about the new year by showing it starting on January 1st and working with a sequence of images up until the 7th. Each calendar page then has one of the 7 new years resolutions that Tim has set himself handwritten on to it.
Finally for "Doctor, doctor" I wanted to create an illustration like the ones seen in scientific journals and articles which show cells and cell structure but in an illustrative and simplified way. I found an image of the structure of a T - cell (Which the article tells me are the cells responsible for fighting off foreign bacteria) and I recreated it in my own way to show a simplified but accurate representation.

I think that overall these images work quite well within the context of the brief but I also think they could definitely be improved on. Probably my least favourite of the images are the new years resolution and the relationship maths pictures.
The relationship maths image is my least favourite, mainly because of the simplicity of the picture and also I'm not really sure if it makes sense in the context of the conceptual idea. It might need a bit more of the calculator shown to actually make sense. I tried to show as little as possible of the keypad while still representing the calculator but I think I might have taken it too far.
The new years resolution based image is my other least favourite just because it is quite uninteresting. I found it difficult to come up with any ideas of how to take advantage of the content of the article and the L shaped space to fill and I think the result is a bit boring as a result.
For the "This column will change your life" image I really like the concept that I came up with although it doesn't quite work in reality. I couldn't figure out how to represent the actual amount of ducks that the single pound coin would represent and still fit them into the space in equal lines. As such, the number of ducks is only very loosely accurate to the £1 being split between them (Figures mentioned in the article).
My favourite of the images is the final image which shows the representation of the T-cell mentioned in the article. I like this image the most because I think it relates best to the article and sort of fits with the surrounding design of the newspaper. It is very simple but relatively accurate as far as I could tell. It also reminds me of a simplified style of scientific illustration found in science journals and publications which ive seen in the past.
In all i think this brief worked out quite well but I would definitely give it another shot if given the brief again and try to touch up the existing images and start from scratch on a couple of them.
