In total, this module has definitely been one of the best modules of the year. I have enjoyed each brief in the module a lot more than most of the briefs throughout the year and I have created some work that I am really happy with and that will definitely go towards my PPD module outcomes. One of the best things about the module was the variety of briefs and the range of work produced. Each brief had a quite specific outcome, and each outcome was very different to the others. This helped develop skills across a range of different resolutions and was a bit of an eye opener as to how different solutions can be used in different situations. It also developed different idea generating skills as each brief called for different ideas and development and had to be dealt with in a different way.
My favourite of the briefs were probably the 'type as image' posters and the 'eye chart' brief.
I really enjoyed the type as image posters and they gave me an opportunity to use and sort of forced me to work with type at the same time. I am not confident in working with type at all as it seems a daunting aspect of design, and we are constantly taught that there is so much bad typography around and I find it difficult to understand how to really use it well. This brief encouraged me to use typography but also allowed the image element to be played with as well rather than just the hardcore detail of classic type use.
I think that my resolutions for the type as image posters turned out really well and are probably one of the better pieces of work that I have created this year. They have also slightly boosted my confidence with incorporating more type and imagery.
The eye chart brief was also one of the best in the module, probably just because I got to use detailed illustration in a way that I haven;t done so far in the course. I like drawing a lot and consider it one of my stronger skills but often find it difficult to find a situation where it is appropriate to use for a brief. This brief was really open and didn't have many constraints so I took the opportunity to draw in detail and I think it worked really well. The eye charts turned out nicely and are another of my better resolutions of the year so far.
I think that my least favourite of the briefs was the book brief. I think that this was a mixture of subject matter and maybe a lack of ambitious design, but I was never really happy with the whole concept of the book at all. I have never been really very confident in creating a book design, even for last years book fair. I think that this is to do with the page layout and how each page works with the next and the entire composition of the book as a whole, but overall I found it difficult and am not really happy with the overall result.
In total, this has been my favourite module so far in the year. I am not sure that it has taught me as much as the other modules have, although I think that the work produced is of a higher quality and I would be much happier to show it as my own.
