Statement of Intent
1. Rationale
For this half of the module I want to mainly focus on animation and illustration. These are two of my strengths in the field and they are aspects of design that I want to take advantage of. I have briefly touched on animation in the previous module but did not really produce anything that I was happy with and don’t think I showed off the best of my abilities. Similarly I have only dealt with illustration a handful of times through the course so far and would like to use the skill more. The briefs that I have looked at were all based around these in some way, and the re-written brief incorporates both. In this way I will have the opportunity to focus my design on the things that I really want to show off about. This will also let me look into and research more animations and illustrations, which are a big area of interest for me and will let me find more designers and their styles.
2. Statement of Intent
To fulfil my rationale I will need to fully explore the ways in which I can use animation and Illustration to my advantage. In selecting briefs, I chose those which exclusively mentioned illustration or animation as outcomes or resolutions. None of the briefs completely fitted what I want to produce, either as a result of the outcomes of some constraints. For example, one of the briefs that stood out to me was the ‘Poster For Tomorrow’ brief, as it was focussed on illustration and was for a good cause. However, the subject was quite uninteresting and the resolution was not of a range. I have recreated the brief to incorporate an Illustration and an Animation brief from my selected 5 so that I can get the most out of both of them. The main aspect of the brief will be the animation, which will take the longest to produce by far. It is quite an ambitious brief all in all but I want to aim to stretch my potential and to test my abilities in both design production and in time management and organisation.
The main product for the brief will be an animation of no more than 3 minutes in length. It will be used as major promotional material for the “International Animation Film Festival” and will based on the theme of “Animation, Land of Freedom”. Within this, I aim to base the animation around the idea of imagination and attempt to show that anything imaginable can be created through animation. To do this I will try to incorporate as many imaginary references as I can into the animation. The range will be in the form of further, smaller scale promotional material for the festival, possibly including tickets, posters and mailshots in various forms. Distribution could come in the form of a DVD and packaging or could be mostly digitally based.
3. Brief
The original briefs to respond to were the Youtube & International Animation Film Festival brief and the Poster for Tomorrow brief. My re-written brief will appear below.
4. Research
The first thing to research will be to go into more depth about the festival itself and about the promotion for previous years. I will also look into their current logo’s/ branding that I can use in the animation or promotional material and whether it needs to be addressed as a part of my brief. I will also need to research into last years winner, as the brief was a competition. Researching different styles of animation will be important to settle on a style to use in my animation, and this will need to be done quickly as I have to stick to a tight schedule of working.
Primary research could come in the form of opinion-based research regarding styles of animation and lengths. The audience for the brief is anyone who watches animations or is interested in them, as well as targeting those who are not and trying to persuade them that they should be. Getting peoples opinions will be invaluable. In deciding on what imaginary references to make, I could ask people their own experiences with imagination in terms of remembered dreams or past imaginary experiences.
5. Practical Development
The main skills that I will be using will be regarding illustration and animation. I will work with rough illustration before I attempt to put the drawing into animation form so drawing will be important. I will also be using digital animation, probably in Adobe Flash above all else. When it comes to dealing with the range, I will also need to work with layout design and with printing facilities.
6. Recording, Documentation & Evaluation
The majority of recording the development of my work will be through the design practice and design context blogs and will probably be mostly digital. Some of my work will need to be photographed or scanned, as it will involve sketching and drawing and maybe the photographing of some design sheets or resolutions.
